The collection contans a journal, 1807-1826, kept by Henry J. Arnhold, an English immigrant. The first few pages of the volume, 1807-1812, were used in settling Mutual Assurance Society accounts of his relative William Frederick Ast, the founder of the Society. In 1812, with war eminent, Arnhold left his position as clerk with the state of Virginia and established Arnhold & Cloetta, a confectionery shop, operating a year until Leonard Cloetta "eloped" and the business dissolved. In 1817 he and his wife removed to Staunton, Va., for his health. He changed his name to Arnold and operated a store, 1817-1818. Arnold records store accounts, personal and business expenses and estate settlement accounts for both enterprises. The volume is notable for detailed explanations of many entries. Among the business expenses were payments to Thomas Ritchie for printing. After a year's break the remainder of the volume, 1819-1826, contains invoices for general merchant Isaac Hardesty of Rockingham County, chiefly with Baltimore merchants. The second volume is a business ledger, 1876-1879, of Joseph P. Ast, of Staunton, Va., a butcher whose customers included former CSA General John Echols. The collection also contains the World War I papers of Joseph P. Ast, Jr., including secret field orders for the 116th Infantry, January 6, 1919, delivered to Ast as Commanding Officer Machine Gun Company, 116h Regiment (Virginia National Guards)

The Mutual Assurance Society Against Fire on Buildings of the State of Virginia was founded on December 22, 1794 by an act of incorporation by the Virginia General Assembly. On May 17, 1982 the members of the Society changed the name of the company to "Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia".
